Corfu has a long history since the ancient Greece. The Corfiots where the best sailors because they where the only people in the known history that they command their ships without tiller.
The Greek name of Corfu is Kerkyra. This name is connected with two powerfull water symbols from the ancient Greece. These symbols are the Poseidon god of the sea and Asopos an important Greek river. According to the myth Poseidon fell in love with the beautiful nymph Korkyra.
Korkyra was the the daughter of Asopus and the river nymph Metope. Poseidon brought her to the hitherto unnamed island and, being in marital bliss offered her name to the place: Korkyra, which gradually over the years evolved to Kerkyra. Then Korkyra and Poseidon had a chilled and they called it Phaiax, After the inhabitants of the island were named Phaiakes.
At the modern history the island because of its position was under the hands of many civilaziotion and each one of them left something at the island. These civilaziotions are Roman, Venetian, French and the British. Romans left only some temples, Venetian and French left their architecture all over the Corfu town and the English left the Ginger beer and the Cricket.Corfiots still drink ginger beer and play Cricket.
