Corfu Town

Corfu town is the capital of Corfu island and is one of the most historical, beautiful and elegant towns of Greece. Corfu town is the largest and the most populated towns of the Ionian Islands with over 50.000 inhabitants. The Corfu town has a unique architecture and that is by the many centuries of dominations by the French, English, Russian, and Sicilian. Everyone left something to Corfu. The most wonderful and elegant are the buildings, the mansions and the superb palaces.

The French have left the two fortresses and the big flowered squares. Corfu town throw year has expanded a lot and is separated into a northern and southern section. The old town (the locals call it “palleopoli” or “campielo” is the northern section and is between Espianade square and the new fortress. The square of Espianade is one of the biggest squares of the Balkans and it became public when the island became under the French occupation.

At this time the French change the square completely according to the French garden architecture. Every summer at this square the game of Cricket is playing. The only place in Greece that is playing cricket is Corfu. This is inherited from the English occupation. Espianade square is surrounded from great buildings, the old fortress and imposing monuments. One of the most beautiful buildings is the Liston building which is standing at the west side of Espianada. This building made by the French. It’s superb arched terrace was inspired by the architectural style of the Rue de Rivoli in Paris. In our days these building hosts the most elegant and luxurious cafes, restaurants and houses.
